Arizona Highway Safety Corridors

The safety corridors is a collaborative effort. We're looking at ways to reduce the number of fatalities as well as serious injuries on our system. In Arizona, we had 897 fatals in 2015. So far in 2016, we're up more than 2015.

We need to do something about it. That's why DPS also is going to join with ADOT and us in promulgate the message of awareness, and drive safely and be sure that you pay attention to what you are doing. We will be installing signs within the safety corridor so the traveling public will know when they're in a safety corridor. DPS is looking at ways to bolster the enforcement.

Increased enforcement for us will mean putting more units out there. The speeders that are weaving in and out of traffic, cutting people off, the reckless drivers, those are the ones that we're going to be targeting the most. A typical shift in the morning is traffic is extremely heavy. I take a lot of wrecks.

You've got four lanes of traffic plus an HOV lane. You've got the Sun barreling in your face. You've got the sun visor down. If you're on the phone or you're distracted just a little bit, it's pretty bad.

94 Percent of the incidents are due to travel behavior. So we identify these corridors as locations where we want to reduce the number of behavioral issues. The first phase we will actually implement before the end of this year, between I-17 and SR 51 or from the Stack to the Mini Stack, and I-10 between the 202 Santan and SR 187. The second phase will actually begin early next year and we're looking at I-40 between the 93 up around the Kingman area, east and west of Kingman as well as US 60 between the 101 Price freeway and 202 Red Mountain freeway.

We want to really inform and educate the public. Traveling at the speed, being buckled up, being attentive, not drinking and driving, those are important. You need to know who is in front of you, who is behind you, who is going to pass. If there's red lights coming on in front of you way past, it means that somebody's braking and people are so busy with their cell phones, with the radio, with music, they forgot that driving is a privilege and they have to pay attention.

That's what this is all about. ADOT... Keeping Arizona moving..
